The Greeks and the Economy
The Greek economy is suffering, but the Greeks can at least take pride in giving their current woe a name. The English word “economy” is derived from the ancient Greek word οἶκοσ, meaning house, and νόμοσ, meaning law. The Greeks combined these two words as the adjective οἰκονομίκά, meaning skilled in the management of a household. Aristotle wrote, or is reputed to have written a book by that title. It begins as follows:
ἡ οἰκονομικὴ καὶ πολιτικὴ διαφέρει οὐ μόνον τοσοῦτον ὅσον οἰκία καὶ πόλις (ταῦτα μὲν γὰρ αὐταῖς ἐστι τὰ ὑποκείμενα), ἀλλὰ καὶ ὅτι ἡ μὲν πολιτικὴ ἐκ πολλῶν ἀρχόντων ἐστίν, ἡ οἰκονομικὴ δὲ μοναρχία.
Household management and politics differ not so much as a house and a city (for these underlie each) but politics has many rulers and the household a single ruler.
